Camps
Our council owns three camp properties, and we are fortunate to have one right here in Charlottesville/Albemarle! Camp Sugar Hollow is located near Crozet and is available for troops to rent for camping and hosting events. Service projects at the camp are also welcome, but please contact Diane Benham to help coordinate with the council.
There are two other camps in our council as well: Camp Icimani (where the council is headquartered in Roanoke) and Camp Sacajawea (in Lynchburg). Learn more about our camp properties and what each offers at https://www.gsvsc.org/en/camp/explore-the-camps.html.
Each July our council holds a day camp at the Sugar Hollow property. Girls from K-7 grades may attend as campers and girls in grades 7-11 may serve as youth staff. The camp is run completely by volunteers, and they always need adult leaders as well! Typically the camp recruits adult leaders and youth staff beginning in January and camper registration generally begins around the end of March/beginning of April. Youth Camp Leadership: An Opportunity for Girls in Grades 7-11
Girls entering grades 7-11 may serve at most summer camps as a youth staff member. There are several levels of youth camp leadership:
Camp Program Assistant (CPA): Girls in grades 7-11; first level of camp leadership.
Counselor In Training (CIT) I: Girls in grades 8-11 serve as a CIT I for up to 2 years, after first serving as a CPA.Â
Counselor In Training (CIT) II: Girls in grades 10-11 serve as a CIT II for up to 2 years, after having served as a CIT I for two years.
Girls who are first time CPAs or CIT I's must take a leadership training course for that specific level. These trainings are often held in the spring in advance of summer camp. More details on each level and links to the Council calendar with training dates can be found at https://www.gsvsc.org/en/camp/summer-camps.html.
